Story
I'm not at all certain how open access the first part of this trip is , but I've always wanted to just 'go up the valley' . So with the recent extended dry period still prevailing , I did . The route is pretty obvious all the way up to Miry Clough from where it joins the main path to Grains in the Water.
I had no real plans for the tops . The day was pretty hazy despite the cloudless sky , the curse of high pressure , so there was little point in seeking out long-distance vistas . Given the tinder-dry ground and summer temperatures a wander around the edges of Bleaklow Ridge to the Fork Stones and among the groughs of Upper Fork Grain and Alport Head seemed most appealing , with a gentle return along the Ridge onto Westend Moor.
Seven hares , two common lizards and a peregrine made a memorable day.
As always , the going can be uneven and rough , and it is rare for the tops to be this dry with all landmarks visible.
