Story
A visit to some of the lesser visited parts of the Eastern Moors . As a result paths may not be obvious on the ground , and the going can be wet and slogging .
The descent via Howden Clough should be considered carefully ; the bank is steep and the upper part of the clough is treacherously full of extensively overgrown stream . A more prudent and pleasant descent is probably to follow the obvious path down from Row Top to emerge by the Howden Dam wall.
A side trip to the Wet Stones is seen on this log - for those fitter and younger this can easily be extended into a return via the Abbey Brook . Setting off from High Stones towards the headwaters of the brook will allow a full exploration of the gorge .
This is not the Himalayas , or even Scottish hills . But neither is it Dovedale or Chatsworth . You should feel confident with equipment and skills before wandering up here , and know about what the weather can do .Sermon over , and if benighted in mist , the Woodhead pass is due north and seemingly always occupied !
