I wasn't going to put this one up , but it was pointed out that the moors are like this too.....My hope was that the tops would clear , but the forecast was very cagey about the front movement , so they didn't . So you will have to take my word for it that the views are excellent in good weather.Going was as wet and splashy as could be expected and the Snake Path was indistinguishable from the River Ashop in the headwaters . Compass essential. For some perverse reason I decided to fork left and take the woodland walk on the way back . The path up Lady Clough is a gloomy and boggy track climbing dead straight through dreary pine forest , with no escape . A remorseless slog ,not recommended even on the most summery day . Much better to cut straight back to the Snake Inn .
Parking for a couple of cars is available in a layby just down from the Snake Inn on the Sheffield side.In conditions like this , remember that there are some fairly hefty feeders into the River Ashop crossing the Snake Path . If the rain becomes torrential they may be unfordable . I usually head left at the start of the walk to take a look at the confluence of the Ashop and Fairbrook - it gives an idea of how much water is coming down off the tops before starting .
