Story
Snow on the tops , and a clear weather window - an irresistable combination. It wasn't quite as clear on the day as I'd hoped , the sun obstinately aloof behind cloud all day , but no complaints . Visibility occasionally allowed a glimpse of the other side of Woodhead , and Bleaklow and Kinder summits were clear .. One of the things I most enjoy about frozen tops is the ability to wander happily over normally very squelchy and rough bits , so I varied the normal route to Sheepfold Clough a little . Crossing the Abbey Brook was pretty uneventful , as was contouring round to Wet Stones . On to High Stones , and decision time .Plenty of daylight time left , and there's little chance of getting lost on the reservoir road in the dark , but the next easy track down is Cut Gate , and , contrary to the forecast , snow flakes are beginning to appear from an increasingly darker east . So I decided on an early return down Row Top .I'm glad I did , for while I doubt there would have been any real problem on the hill , snow was settling fast , and unpredicted , by the time I arrived back in Sheffield.............
It's always worthwhile remembering that the car you left in the morning on a clear road has to get home too .On that note , I once returned to a car with a dead battery at the Kings Tree . Many belated thanks to the kind couple who 'phoned home ' for me when they got a signal on exiting the Upper Derwent Valley .
