Story
I enjoy being outdoors on crisp sunny such as this one. Morning temps were in the teens but once Squashman and I hit the trailhead it was in the lower 30's.
Our primary goal today was to see the Tophet Chasm. It was truly unusual. Here you are in Littleton, Massachusetts and you are soon walking along the rim of a 200 foot chasm that was once the site of a glacial lake. I haven't seen topography like this is southern New England. We decided to go down into the chasm to find a "Return to Tradition" cache. Because the ground under the leaves was frozen and icy I went down mostly on my backside since I knew I would be on that same backside had I chanced the vertical route down.
We looked for a good half hour for the cache. It was difficult because the chasm walls were very steep and slippery. As is often the case we found the cache on our parting look.
You don't need to descend into the chasm to enjoy this unusual geological wonder. I'd advise that you "google" the location before you visit so you can better appreciate and understand the location.
