Story

There is a faint path high up on the side of Ravens Clough , but to be honest it's easier to just pick a way round the northern shoulder according to inclination , and I prefer the views from about half way up , so to speak . The bracken makes it a bit treacherous at this time of year and the gradient is steep, so watch the feet .The moor is featureless on top , but heading north-westerly over the rise intercepts the track over the Ridge to Bleaklow stones , and in bad conditions allows an easy escape into Grains in the Water . Today was a doddle , as the showers kept well above the hill .Indeed , sun , blue sky , and a synchronised sheep team made for a pleasant lunch stop at the Stones , and I thought of returning round the Barrow Stones .Then came the hail .So I decided to go down directly over the headwaters of Deep Grain - the groughs are deepish , but easily crossable , and the views of Grinah Stones good . And all went well , and even the soggy bit from the shooters track to Grinah was pleasant , and then the rain started in earnest .At least it made the Ronksley Moor Ridge route invisible . Never my favourite track even in drought , in the thunder shower it was hardly noticed .The rain stopped as I arrived on the shooters track down to the Westend Valley , and I had a pleasant sunshine walk down to the bridge . At which point a mewing caught my ear , and a buzzard wheeled as it hunted the ridge - a perfect end to the day I thought , now dry .Two minutes later , along came the next 'shower' . When it wets out Paramo Cascadas I know it's bad .

Most of this walking is over rough ground , and even where paths are indicated , they are likely to be wet and uneven  . The first part of the Westend valley and the track to Ridgewalk Moor are good going.
